We are creating an urban farm and market out of shipping containers. We grow our food and sell it at the same site. We consolidate the distribution system to lower costs and raise the value of the produce by providing the freshest produce possible. We have finished our prototypes and are now looking for investors and a site in the triangle region of North Carolina.

The Coming Entrepreneurship Boom
See on Scoop.it - Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism

The Coming Entrepreneurship Boom

Rick Passo’s insight:

http://www.kauffman.org/research-and-policy/the-coming-entrepreneurial-boom.aspx

Several facts have emerged in the course of Kauffman Foundation research that indicate the United States might be on the cusp of an entrepreneurship boom—not in spite of an aging population but because of it. This study shows that as the economic recession plagues the job market, more and more “baby-boomers” are becoming entrepreneurs. The decline of lifetime employment, the experience and knowledge of the age group, longer lifespan, and the effect of the current recession are all factors contributing to the increase in entrepreneurial activity in the baby boom generation. The study was conducted by Dane Stangler, senior analyst at the Kauffman Foundation.

Key findings: In every single year from 1996 to 2007, Americans between the ages of 55 and 64 had a higher rate of entrepreneurial activity than those aged 20-34, averaging a rate of entrepreneurial activity roughly one-third larger than their youngest counterparts.
The 20-34 age bracket has the lowest rate of entrepreneurial activity.
Long-term employment has fallen dramatically for people ages 35-64 over the past fifty years.
With longer life expectancies and greater health in later life, older generations may continue to start new firms—or mentor young entrepreneurs.
Since the first Internet-era recession, transaction costs and barriers to entry have fallen for entrepreneurs of every age.

If you are a veteran or know a veteran interested in becoming a farmer, here are a few resources to consider:

The Farmer Veteran Coalition offers a comprehensive resource guide that details employment, training and fellowship opportunities available specifically for veterans. The guide is tailored to both beginning and established farmers, and includes an extensive list of financing options, business planning tips and where to find additional supporting organizations.Based in Colorado, Veterans to Farmers is a non-profit organization – founded by former US Marine Buck Adams – focused on teaching veterans organic, controlled-environment growing techniques. Training programs are offered in 9 to 12 month cycles, with an emphasis on organic hydroponic agriculture. Students leave the program with skills in systems construction, greenhouse maintenance and operations, plant propagation and business management planning.Veterans Farm grows blueberries and peppers in containers, allowing for wheelchair accessibility. Located in Jacksonville, Florida, the farm offers a 6-month horticultural therapy program where participants harness their military leadership skills and apply them to successful entrepreneurship ventures in agriculture. The founders of Archi’s Acres, a farm in Southern California, developed the Veterans Sustainable Agriculture Training (VSAT)program to help transition service men and women into the sustainable agriculture industry. The program consists of over 240 hours of hands-on farm training, farm management, business planning and entrepreneurship. The Center for Rural Affairs, a non-profit organization dedicated to establishing and maintaining strong rural communities, developed the Veteran Farmers Project. Participants gain access to training, individual consultation and a helpline for specialized answers.Beginning Farmers is an online resource for farmers, researchers and policy makers. The website includes a section of veteran farmer success stories, training and employment opportunities.

Desert Research Institute’s GreenPower Program Engages Students with Hydroponics in a Box

Rick Passo’s insight:

http://seedstock.com/2013/06/11/desert-research-institutes-greenpower-program-engages-students-with-hydroponics-in-a-box/

There are many hydro-centric businesses emerging in the area, said Amelia Gulling of DRI, who is the administrator for the institute’s GreenPower Program. “And there are going to be some international businesses hopefully coming specifically to Las Vegas to do larger scale hydro-farming,” Gulling said. “And because of that, we want to make sure our future generations can possibly work for and can have an understanding of how hydro works — we want to educate them. They are our future decision makers.”

http://greenpower.dri.edu

To promote such education surrounding hydroponics and other environmental science topics, DRI launched its GreenPower Program in 2000 to serve as the institute’s outreach program to get students excited about science. The Institute’s GreenPower Program’s lessons, designed for Nevada teachers and students, don’t rehash the mundane science topics of yesteryear (there are no boring labs in these unit plans.) The Institute’s lessons concern fresh, new topics, such as hydroponics and permaculture. The GreenPower Program also supports professional development for Nevada teachers and provides them with various educational materials, such as the Institute’s Green Boxes.

A framework for finding appropriate financing sources for Good Food biz - webinar June 20
Elizabeth Ü, author of “Raising Dough,” will provide a helpful framework for thinking about appropriate financing sources for enterprises, sensitive to their unique values, priorities, and where they are in the business lifecycle. Her presentation is designed primarily for organizations that work with socially responsible food businesses, such as people who work for nonprofits, government offices, economic development companies, consulting firms, lenders, foundations, family offices. Of course the same principles apply to fundraising entrepreneurs themselves, who will leave with lots of tools to work with in their quest to raise money.

Gray Harris, of Coastal Enterprises Inc. (CEI), a community development finance institution (CDFI) in Maine, will give some detailed, illustrative examples of their investments, and investment strategies in regional food systems.

Rick Passo’s insight:

https://www.facebook.com/BlueBearFarm

The purpose of Blue Bear Farm is to grow food and use as a tool to educate people about urban farming. With over 5000 square feet of growing space, the farm is a perfect setting for an urban agriculture learning site and boost the local food production economy. In it’s first year of operation the farm estimated production was 1800 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables. Within the next four to five years the farm expected production should reach 5000 pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables per year. A total of 34 different plants are grown in the Blue Bear Farm, including eggplant, squash, tomatoes, melons, and raspberries.

Produce Denver designed, built and is now maintaining the farm. The firm also leads educational programming in the space where youth like the teens from Groundwork Denver’s Green Team who learn urban farming skills working in the farm. MojoGro has generously donated the organic soil being used in the garden beds, and Dutch Heritage Gardens donated many of the plants that are being grown.

Hydroponic Garden

Rick Passo’s insight:

http://show.restaurant.org/Attend/Attractions/Hydroponic-Garden

Hydroponic Garden

The National Restaurant Association has partnered with AMB Eco to create and showcase the first-ever Hydroponic Garden at NRA Show 2013. Attendees will be able to explore a fully functioning hydroponic garden that will grow local, all-natural, pesticide-free produce - right on the show floor. The NRA Show’s Hydroponic Garden uses a combination of artificial light and nutrient-enriched water to give plants everything they need to thrive.

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in a water and mineral nutrient solution without soil.

Compared to traditional soil gardening, hydroponics:

Provides year-round cultivationProduces a higher yleld per square footRequires no weed pullingUses about two-thirds less waterEliminates pesticide damageGrows Swiss chard, sweet basil, purple basil, dill, cilantro, parsley, chives, bibb lettuce, gourmet lettuce mix, habanero peppers, thyme, edible flowers, oregano, red lettuce, green beans, pumpkin, squash, and more

This application allows restaurants to grow fresh food on-site with a tiny physical footprint and minimal resources. Most important, this locally sourced, sustainable innovation is not just attractive to guests, but financially savvy for operators.

“I’ve seen that working with living things (plants), working in our greenhouses, is like being in a decompression zone. You get to actually see the fruits of your labor. And you’re still interacting with the community, you’re still providing a service, which I think a lot of our guys and gals are kind of missing when they come back, not knowing how to break into civilian life. Even if they don’t choose farming as a career, it’s a great transition period.”

Exciting and Rewarding

The techniques taught to these veterans include a full understanding of growing. “It’s basically all controlled-environment agriculture,” Adams explained. “We teach organics, hydroponics, aeroponics and also vertical growing techniques. We use towers that allow us to grow 11 feet inside the greenhouse, so we’re looking at a 10,000- to 12,000-square-foot greenhouse being equivalent to an acre greenhouse, and that being equivalent to about 10 acres of land crops. We teach them the basics of plant biology, climate controls, and how the plant works in the sunlight with CO2 and photosynthesis. We teach nutrient programs and greenhouse maintenance.”

For Adams himself, seeing these veterans winning at life is a reward unto itself. “It’s been a ride for sure,” Adams concluded. “It’s like we kind of plugged in and away we went, and we’re just riding this wave that’s coming at us. But it’s been super-exciting and super-rewarding working with these guys and girls.”

Those kind of numbers are likely to perk up the ears of job-seekers in the Motor City, where theunemployment rate hovers around 23 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Wozniak, a former financial consultant, is the driving force behind a nonprofit calledRecoveryPark, which is developing three separate but related agricultural projects: an urban farm spread out over a 2,475-acre zone on Detroit’s east side, a food processing center and an indoor fish farm.

Word from the Producer: As a recently retired Iraq War Veteran, I understand the challenges of finding employment after military service. Currently, the unemployment rate for male veterans ages 18-24 is 26.5%. Every day more veterans are leaving the military and attempting to enter the civilian workforce. Veterans to Farmers is an amazing program that trains vets in organic greenhouse farming. Vision

To return the family farm to a prominent position on the American landscape.

Mission

To provide American veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts with pride, education and fulfillment through a permanent source of sustainable income, community and contribution: The family farm.

A National Training Center at 2600 Lawrence will provide a physical location for training in aeroponic growing methods, greenhouse maintenance and construction, as well as business planning. The National Training Center will also serve as a community amenity; the food grown here will be sold direct to the consumer through a CSA model, and the greenhouse will be available for tours, farm dinners, and other gatherings.

Veterans will be taught how to build environmentally controlled greenhouses of uniform size and design that utilize methods of high-tech, controlled environment crop culture. The greenhouses will protect crops from rain, snow, heat, cold, wind and insects thus named Controlled Environment Agriculture. Ongoing maintenance and consulting on optimizing the greenhouse is provided through Veterans to Farmers (VTF).

VTF’s partner is Living Tower Farms (LTF), whose mission is to redeploy the American farm, one neighborhood at a time, through franchise and/or company owned vertical growing greenhouse farms. Once veterans have been trained through the 16 week VTF program, LTF deploys their graduates into (for profit) greenhouse sites.

Citywide Urban Agriculture Rezoning Initiative

Boston officials are preparing to present a draft version of new citywide zoning rules designed to expand opportunities for urban agriculture, which is largely prohibited under existing guidelines.

On Monday, city officials will kick-off the first of a series of 11 neighborhood meetings that run through the end of July to discuss the proposed amendment known as Article 89, which officials hope will be formally adopted into Boston’s zoning code in the fall.

“Most agricultural activities are not allowed under the current zoning code,” reads an informational flyer the city released about the rezoning effort. “By addressing a wide range of urban agriculture activities, Article 89 will increase access to healthy food, promote community building, create business opportunities and help beautify neighborhoods.”

The proposed new rules were drafted over the past year-and-a-half by officials from the Boston Redevelopment Authority, the Mayor’s Office of Food Initiatives and the Mayor’s Urban Agriculture Rezoning Working Group, which consists of farming advocates, experts, and residents appointed by Mayor Thomas M. Menino.

Highlights of the proposed zoning changes include that ground-level farms no larger than one acre and roof-top farms no larger than 5,000 square feet would be allowed anywhere in the city. The process for starting one may require obtaining special permits, but it would not involve a public hearing.

Ground-level farms large than one acre would be allowed in areas zoned for industrial use. In all other areas, establishing one-acre plus ground-level farms would require notifying neighbors and holding a public hearing and review process.

Similarly, roof-top farms larger than 5,000 square feet as well as roof-top greenhouses of any size would be allowed in industrial, institutional and large-scale commercial districts. In all other areas, establishing roof-top farms larger than 5,000 square feet or roof-top greenhouses of any size would require going through a public review process.

Under the proposal, city officials would also conduct “Comprehensive Farm Reviews” in certain cases “to make sure farms are designed to be good neighbors.” Ground-level farms larger than 10,000 square feet and roof-top farms larger than 5,000 square feet, with some exceptions in industrial and institutional districts, would be subject to the reviews, which would take up to 45 days and include a public comment process.

All farms would be required to meet certain soil standards.

The new rules would allow for composting on any urban farm as long as it doesn’t occupy more than 5 percent of the lot. Where composting operations are located on a lot would be subject to city review.

The proposal also includes rules about: aquaculture, or farming fish and shellfish; hydroponics, or growing plans in nutrient-enriched water; and aquaponics, a combination of aquaculture and hydroponics.

Aquaculture and aquaponics facilities no larger than 750 square feet would be allowed in most zoning districts, including residential areas. Hydroponics facilities would be allowed in most zoning districts, including small-scale facilities in residential areas.

Aquaculture and aquaponics facilities designed to be as the main activity of a property would be allowed in industrial districts and many waterfront districts. Establishing such facilities in commercial and institutional areas would require going through a public review process.

Farmers’ markets and farm stands would be allowed in any area where retail is allowed. Markets and stands in other areas would require going through a public review process.

The amendment would not change existing rules for where hens and bees can be kept. Backyard hen and bee keeping is prohibited in most zoning districts in Boston under the existing zoning code.

Boston’s restrictions on bees and hens have faced some criticism over the years, including by some who had hoped that Article 89 would ease those restrictions.

“Whether hens and bees may be kept is a decision left up to individual neighborhoods,” the city’s flyer says. “Use regulations for the keeping of hens and bees can be changed by petitioning the BRA.”

In zoning areas where hens and bees are allowed, city rules require the establishment of such a site to go through a public review process. Article 89 does propose changing the current code for those areas to define how large beehives and coops can be, how many hens and beehives are allowed, along with other size and maintenance requirements.

Farms and gardens on the ground and atop roofs have become increasingly popular in recent years in urban settings, including in and around Boston.

City officials say expanding urban agriculture opportunities will be good for Boston because: it would improve access to affordable, fresh, healthy food; empower entrepreneurs and youth; unite neighbors; promote community building; and make the city more environmentally friendly.

The city’s existing zoning code does not address many types of agriculture. Any activity that is not addressed in the code is considered to be a forbidden use that requires a sometimes lengthy, frustrating appeal process to navigate around.

Article 89 aims to eliminate some of the red tape by more clearly defining and simplifying the process around agricultural activity in Boston.

Detroit’s new urban agriculture ordinance -- abridged
See on Scoop.it - Yellow Boat Social Entrepreneurism

Rick Passo’s insight:

Detroit’s new urban agriculture ordinance addresses a variety of farming, gardening and other uses including aquaculture, aquaponics, farmers market, greenhouses, hoophouses, hydroponics, urban farms, and urban gardens. The urban gardens are allowed by-right in all of the city’s six residential districts. The by-right designation will allow these uses to occur with limited review by the city. Gardens are by-right uses in all of the business districts except the B5 business district. The gardens are permitted in that particular district as a conditional use.

To be a qualified recipient, one must have served in the US Military and is either in the process of transitioning out or has already transitioned out, is now a veteran, and would like to gain the necessary skill sets and knowledge for a particular industry or to start their own business. We give priority to military personnel that have served in the last 20 years over those that have served before that. The qualified recipient must have served honorably or had an honorable discharge. The qualified recipient may also be the immediate family member of a military personnel(spouse, son or daughter) IF the military personnel is disabled or the family member currently works with or is a part of the business.

“We believe the next wars are going to be over food and water. So who better to train than our military in water conservation and food production?” – Karen Archipley

Returning military often find themselves struggling to return to normality after serving overseas. Colin Archipley, co-owner of Archi’s Acres in Escondido, CA knows exactly how they feel. He served three tours of duty during the Iraq War that began in 2003. Between his second and third deployment, Colin, along with his wife Karen, bought an inefficiently run avocado farm. Besides starting their own very successful living basil hydroponics farm on the site, the empathetic couple created an incubator for transitioning veterans. What they created became known as the Veterans Sustainable Agriculture Training or VSAT program, a way to help veterans train for self-employment in the peaceful profession of hydroponic farming.

From Kitchen Scraps to Internal Composting to Plant Food!
As water is poured on the top to feed the plants, some of the water seeps through the holes running down the length of the compost tube. As this water seeps through the compost tube it absorbs nutrients from the castings and the compost, directly feeding the plant roots and collecting at the bottom drain hole.

The Garden Tower is a revolutionary self-contained vertical garden / composting system capable of transforming home gardening, urban gardening, and making a difference.

Garden Tower Project is a socially-responsible company based in Bloomington, Indiana whose mission is to make that happen innovatively, collaboratively, and affordably.

Less Fertilizer, More Nutrients, Faster Growth!

Plants grow faster in the Garden Tower because they are protected in their own special microclimate, and because they have constant access to nutrient-dense water. Water is steeped in a hearty brew of “compost tea” and “worm tea” via the vermicompost tube and returned to the soil repeatedly.  One unexpected bonus of this rapid growth is that you can grow a larger crop of spring vegetables before replacing them with summer plants.

Additionally, the heat storage and insulation provided by the vertical composting Garden Tower allow for an increased growing season over typical container gardening approaches which offer a less stable soil environment; other vertical growing systems simply do not have the necessary thermal mass.

50 Plants + Composting in Four Square Feet! The Garden Tower grows plants vertically, enabling you to grow 50 plants in a very small space — the ultimate square foot garden with integrated composting!
